How understanding stem formation and etymology of words in one language can help you with others…..some practical examples

I practised the attached word formation exercise with a fairly able Year 9 French set last year and, as they were also studying Latin and Spanish, they really started to get excited about, (in so much as Year 9 boys can!), and see the significance of being able to understand and insert similar words based on their knowledge of Latin stems. Of course, it is always useful if students can try to guess the meaning of words through cognates but sometimes you have to be careful!
